-
[Text] Specialists of the Rare Metals Company complain that
- the world market for uranium concentrate has never been so bad;
- otherwise, they say, we would have superb conditions for
- producing concentrate, but no one wants to buy it at our prices.
- The market, however, is only reacting normally to the
- fluctuating conditions. Uranium concentrate is being offered
- world-wide in immense amounts, so the price naturally plummets.
- It is difficult to say how long this will go on. The only
- certainty is that the company chiefly responsible for beating
- down the price is Tekhnoeksportsnab of Russia, which every 3
- months floods the uranium market with material, offering almost
- one-quarter of the total amount available. Yet again, why should
- it not do this? The company needs foreign currency, and God has
- given it uranium concentrate. Apart from its own production, for
- years the company has obtained concentrate for a song from the
- fraternal countries. As a result, it has amassed an immense
- stockpile of approximately 150,000 tonnes! We have to wait and
- see whether the price rises soon....
-

-
This is not the only problem, unfortunately. Under the
- agreements for reducing strategic nuclear arms it is expected
- that over 500 tonnes of enriched 96-percent uranium will be
- released, which can very easily be converted into 3.5-percent
- uranium concentrate.
-

-
Using this formerly lethal material which has been
- reprocessed into a fuel, all the nuclear power plants in the
- world could operate for several years! Accordingly, there is no
- question of uranium concentrate being in short supply--quite
- the opposite!
